Activists Challenge Purpose of Anti-Gay Marriage Bills

Summary


Social-conservative Republican state legislators held a news conference Monday to discuss a package of bills to encourage and strengthen marriage. But they were confronted by a crowd of activists who wanted to know why the lawmakers oppose the benefits of marriage for same-sex couples.

Republican Sens. Bill Sharer of Farmington and Mark Boitano of Albuquerque were approached by gay-rights activists outside the Capitol after the news conference. Each engaged in lengthy discussions with activists, who had shown up to the Roundhouse for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Lobbying Day, sponsored by Equality New Mexico, a gay-rights organization.
