Eleven years ago, when it first took place, the yearly music and dance concert that coincides with Santa Fe's Indian Market festivities -- today called the Native Roots and Rhythms Festival -- was known as the Red Nation Celebration. Since its inception, Native Roots and Rhythms has sought to present a cross-section of Native American performing arts. Traditional instrumentalists and folk- rockers, sacred chanters and popular-song singers, dancing and drumming ensembles, comedians, politicians, and activists all have been showcased.
