Cowboys were looked upon as role models when Samuel Adelo was growing up in Pecos in the years after World War I, and he took to wearing a cowboy hat when he was a boy.

"Our heroes were the cowboys," he said. "Not only the real cowboys, but the cowboys in the movies. They were hardworking. They were gentlemen.
