Summary
There's something about French music, especially popular song, that tickles people pink. The classical style of French vocal music known as melodie has its exponents -- Faure, Duparc, Ravel, Debussy, and Poulenc among them -- but chansons, the songs of the cafes and boulevards, exert even more charm than those of the concert hall.
Many great chansonniers have been of French birth -- often Parisian.
