Aside from introducing seniors to the possibilities of new friends, the Ponce de Leon Retirement Center is working with Felines & Friends to control a nearby colony of community cats. The nonprofit, in cooperation with the Zimmer Foundation's Spay Santa Fe and with the help of Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society's Wellness Clinic, hopes to spay and neuter the colony.
So far, nine cats have been trapped and are now sterilized, vaccinated against rabies and have had their ears clipped to identify them as part of a controlled colony.
