Summary


Part of the charm that draws visitors to New Mexico from around the country and around the world can be found in old customs, which are not quite like those anywhere else. Things like Pueblo-style adobe houses, green-chile stew, luminarias at Christmas and homemade carvings of the saints are all uniquely New Mexican.

Years ago, someone called New Mexico "the land that time forgot." No doubt he was referring to the persistence of ancient traditions and practices along the upper Rio Grande. While much does survive, a great deal more that was once part of the cultural landscape has disappeared.
