As I watched the opening ceremonies of the Olympics the other evening, I allowed myself to be transported, if only in my mind's eye, to Turin, Italy, where athletes from around the world are competing under the banner of brotherhood.
I imagined myself warmly bundled at an outdoor cafe, sipping a Barolo wine while dipping my fingers into a bowl of oil-rich Tuscan olives. When the television screen came back into view, I realized it wasn't just coincidence olives were fueling my Olympic daydream. Symbols of peace, subjects of myths, and intrinsic to the diets of Mediterranean people, olives have been a unifying force for centuries. To this day we "offer an olive branch" when referring to a peace proposal.See the full content of this document
