As the Thanksgiving season appears on the near horizon, many of us become retrospective by "giving thanks" to our loved ones, friends and community. This year the Realtors Association of New Mexico (RANM) is providing a new way to give back. The RANM Benevolent Fund provides assistance for Realtor members who have encountered severe financial hardships beyond their control. All donations to the fund are tax-deductible and donors will receive a written confirmation for their donation. A donation can be made to memorialize or honor an individual. RANM has set a fundraising goal of $100,000 for 2010.

In looking back at our real-estate community this year, it's important to acknowledge and publicly thank the U.S. government for the housing-stimulus programs enacted to encourage homeownership and keep struggling homeowners in their homes. The First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit of $8,000 has helped buyers in our market to get off the fence and into homes. In fact, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) projects that some 300,000 people who otherwise couldn't have entered the market will buy this year due to the tax credit. NAR research estimates that at least $18.6 billion in economic activity will result from these home sales, since each of them generates tens of thousands of dollars in additional spending.
