A Taos-based environmental group will go through the motions of staking a mining claim to 20 acres of prime public land along the Pecos River today.

Their goal isn't to extract minerals from the popular picnic and fishing area but to illustrate the need to reform the federal 1872 Mining Act, which allows miners to exploit public land at little cost.
