Finders Sculptors

Summary

Sculpture and works on paper by one of America's most dynamic artists is featured at Zane Bennett Contemporary Art beginning Friday, June 12. Mark di Suvero: Sculpture, Drawings, Prints opens and runs concurrently with Holly Roberts: Anomalous Tales and Denise Yaghmourian: Outside the Box. A reception for the shows is scheduled from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

Born in China to Italian parents, Mark di Suvero immigrated to the United States in 1941 at the age of 8. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, for fine arts, but instead earned a degree in philosophy. Subsequently, he relocated to New York City, where he established himself as one of America's most innovative sculptors in the 1950s, creating large-scale pieces, often with kinetic components, that consisted of discarded tires, railroad ties, scrap metal, and steel. His turn to sculpture came as a result of an on-the-job injury in construction. During his rehabilitation and bound to a wheelchair, di Suvero learned to weld; and under the influence of Abstract Expressionism, he became known for his massive, nonobjective work using structural I-beams.
