'Tis the season -- for poinsettias and paperwhites, for amaryllis and cyclamen, for holiday wreaths and decorated trees -- to brighten these dark days leading up to winter solstice on Dec. 21. It is the shortest day and longest night of the year when the sun ("sol") stands still ("stice"), having progressed as far south as it can and ready to begin its northerly path.

This is the time when halcyon days snuggle up to either side of the winter solstice, ushering in a season of tranquility and goodwill and persuading us to treasure a bit of hush amid the holiday rush
