Attendance for the 2009 edition of Haciendas: A Parade of Homes, which took place over seven days in August, was hearty. Cheri Johansen, executive director of the sponsoring Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association, estimated they sold more than 3,000 tickets.

The showcase of 28 houses was notable not only for the quality of construction evident across the board but for the fact that 22 of the houses had price tags of over $1 million. This contrasts markedly with the Santa Fe real-estate market, where most homes actually are sold are in the lower and midprice range.

After all, the name says it: "hacienda" has never, traditionally, meant modest. But to what degree should Haciendas represent the real market? "I think people are always interested in seeing how the other half lives," Johansen said. "We'll probably always have homes that are more expensive than the regular homes in Santa Fe. That's what people like to see and that's what the builders like to show off. I personally love the remodels and we get a lot of positive buzz on those. I think people really like to see how you can transform an older home."
