Summary
Joe Montoya grew up in Sapello, N.M., and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCA, in 1939 at age 17. He helped build the Japanese internment camp near the current Solana Center.
Later, he enlisted in the Army and served in the European Theater. He was in Germany when the war ended, according to his daughter, and finished his tour of duty in Tampa, Fla. He won the European-African-Middle Eastern, or EAME, Theater ribbon with two Bronze Stars.See the full content of this document
