LOS ALAMOS -- Though he lives in Wyoming, Scott Kelley could feel the ripple effects if the University of California stops running Los Alamos National Laboratory for the federal government.

Because his father is employed at the lab, Kelley can get in- state tuition at any UC campus. The Santa Barbara campus has one of the better graduate programs in geography in the country, and Kelley said he is considering going there. But without the perk from his father's employer, he might change his mind.
