Summary


We humans have a crying need to find meaning and purpose in life - - to see, or believe we see, order in chaos. We seek for revelation in the everyday, even as ancient savants found it in entrails. But however good the auguries were for the king, the army or the people, they were always bad news for the sacrifice.

Such is the message in Jim Leonard's play The Diviners, now on the boards at Theaterwork. And yet, as Friday evening's intense performance proved, the act of sacrifice need not be cruel or deliberate or unthinking: It can come by accident, from the best of motives and through the kindest of hearts. Whether it is ultimately necessary or not is something else.
