Letters to the Editor Tax Assessments Aren't Equitable

Summary


I find myself, as was Chuck Case in his Aug. 15 letter, "Not enough workers," somewhat appalled at the statistics he quotes regarding the payment of income taxes. Forty-seven percent of citizens pay no income taxes? With 9 percent of the populace unemployed (hence no income to pay taxes on), that leaves 38 percent of working Americans too impoverished to pay income taxes.

Of course these workers do pay taxes for Social Security and Medicare and at a much higher rate than do the top 2 percent (not to mention sales taxes). Clearly the country needs more and better jobs to add workers to the ranks of those who pay taxes.
