Mistrial in Sex Case of Former S.F. Priest

Summary

REDWOOD CITY, CA. -- A jury here Friday acquitted a former priest at Santa Fe's St. Francis Cathedral of three counts of sexually abusing a young girl a decade ago in California and deadlocked on the remaining 18 counts. The partial verdict forced San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Robert Foiles to declare a mistrial.

Jose Superiaso, 50, was accused of 21 counts of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under the age of 14 while he was a priest at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Daly City, Calif. The victim, now 22, said she was 12 and 13 at the time of the abuse and the relationship took place while Superiaso was her babysitter. She said they had sex "once or twice a week" for more that a year in 1994 and 1995.
