Summary
OPENING THIS WEEK
CHERI Director Stephen Frears (The Queen) presents an adaptation of Colette's 1920 novel. Period dramas based on French novels are old chapeau for Frears, who also helmed 1988's Dangerous Liaisons and brings that film's writer (Christopher Hampton) and star (Michelle Pfeiffer) to Cheri. Pfeiffer plays Lea, a 19th-century courtesan who has had a six-year affair with the young son (Rupert Friend) of fellow courtesan Charlotte (Kathy Bates). The liaison grows dangerous when Charlotte forces an arranged marriage on her love-struck boy. Rated R. 100 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Not reviewed)See the full content of this document

(3 chiles) FOOD, INC. Director Robert Kenner's documentary attempts to lift the veil that separates people from the true sources of their food. Taking cues from authors/food activists Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser (who co-produced and consulted on the film, respectively), Food, Inc. shows how dangerously underregulated our food supply is and the ridiculous amount of power that huge corporations and food conglomerates have over the foods we grow, eat, and purchase. The film veers in too many directions to fully accomplish its mission. Rated PG. 94 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Rob DeWalt) See review, Page xx.
