Our View Recess Fine, but More Work First

Summary


Congress' August recess, a fine but not-always honorable tradition, has run smack-dab into reality: Here we are, starting the second week of the month -- and the dust is still settling on the lately abandoned Senate, while the House of Representatives has been called into what amounts to a special session.

If that means less summer fun for our 100 senators and 435 representatives, it also means that, in spite of some influential members' insistence on goofing off -- oops, indulging in home/state "work time" -- our federal lawmakers have been doing their jobs. This year's break was scheduled from Aug. 9 through Sept. 12, and what with the busiest days being in midweek, many have made long- weekend escapes -- but the press of business kept most tethered to House or Senate leadership schedules.
