Out and About: River Trails Not Always Public Land

Summary


On Easter afternoon, my wife, son and I were strolling with the dog down the Santa Fe River, enjoying the fact it was a river thanks to the recent precipitation. We exchanged pleasantries with others we passed on the well-worn trails behind the houses of Barrio La Canada where we live.

Instead of heading upstream toward Camino Alire as usual, we followed our 2-year-old son's lead and headed west. I dropped off the trail into the riverbed and soon came to an old 50-gallon drum set smack in the middle of the river, with various "private property" and "keep out" signs posted on it.
