Last month I covered the evolution of adobe homes in New Mexico. Despite conventional stick-and-stucco construction, adobe remains the choice of traditional builders and is still common throughout Santa Fe. For those seeking the look and feel of adobe but want to use modern methods and materials, there are some interesting things going on out there. If you are curious about these methods then read on.

Straw bale was a pioneering method that took some time for the zoning and construction industries to warm up to but has proved the test of time and is still gaining popularity today. This method of stacking bales of straw within a "post and beam" frame can be cheaper than other types of construction because the bales can be erected rather quickly without much experience or power tools.
