Playing to the Gods

The son of wise and royal parents and the king of a prosperous place, he enjoyed health, wealth, and happiness. His family and his people loved and served him. He paid due obeisance to his gods. His country was at peace, and he looked forward to a long and happy life.

Then an oracle spoke, like a dark cloud passing across the sun. Death was coming to the monarch, and soon. Only if someone volunteered to die in his place could he be saved.

Distraught, the poor man sought for a substitute, only to find out that love flees when death looms. His aged parents clung to their existences. His friends refused his plea. Even the sick and poor declined to give up light and air for the gloom of the lower world.

But there was someone who loved the king more than her own self: his wife. She secretly vowed her life to the gods, and they took it. Providently enough, though, a hero friend came...
