I learned recently that it is no longer polite to say that people are poor. To avoid hurt feelings, you should refer to them as "economically disadvantaged."

New Mexico's back country in the 1890s had plenty of souls that were downright poor, even dirt poor, and to be accurate, there was no other way to say it.
