Summary


On June 4, 1696, some of New Mexico's Pueblo Indians launched an uprising against the Spanish government and church. That took place a mere three years after Gov. Diego de Vargas had reclaimed Santa Fe in the wake of the devastating 1680 revolt.

In this second revolt, unlike the first, little unity existed among the Indians and the main fighting was over by the end of the year. Still, serious casualties resulted and only swift action by Vargas prevented a much wider conflagration.
