Summary
Phillip Fiuty has the mildly benevolent job title of harm- reduction coordinator for the state Department of Health's Public Health Division. In reality, the results of his program are anything but mild: Pulling people back from the brink of death due to drug overdose or the dangers of dirty needles. Now, thanks to the efforts of Fiuty and his colleagues, these same kinds of rescues can take place legally in New York as well.
In November Fiuty, along with public-health workers from other parts of the country, was invited to present New Mexico's harm- reduction program to counterparts from New York City and state. Accompanying Fiuty was Dr. Steven Jenison of the New Mexico Department of Health and Capt.
