Public Works: There's Not Much This Crew Can't Do

Summary

When the state Transportation Department's District 4 employees brag about their building and grounds crew (crew 44-25) and say, "There isn't much they can't do" -- it seems literally true. The team of Jimmy Sanchez, Louie Benavidez and Guadalupe Padilla handles all daily and routine maintenance -- office and building cleaning, snow removal and lawn mowing, of course. But they also do plumbing and electrical work; run lines for phones, fax machines and computers; and take care of setup and breakdown tasks for special functions. They've even replaced all the gas lines at the complex, formed and poured concrete sidewalks, erected metal buildings and helped with salt-containment domes and fuel-containment facilities.

All this, with a 13-year injury- and accident-free status, earned the team the agency's crew of the year award for 2007. Plus, their work has saved the department thousands of taxpayer dollars, their nominators said. Sanchez, the crew's supervisor, is a 16-year agency veteran. Benavidez has been with the department 10 years and Padilla has been there 12 years.
