Public Works: Zamboni Driver Creates a Cool Rink

Summary

Santa Fe might not be the first place you think of when it comes to top-quality arena ice. But don't be fooled by our high-desert setting. According to Thomas Fagan, ice-arena manager for the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, we have one of the best Zamboni drivers on the continent. Rubel Gallegos, GCCC's lead rink attendant, makes "some of the finest quality ice in North America," said Fagan, who nominated Gallegos as the city of Santa Fe's July employee of the month.

Fagan himself has made ice around the country, including for the National Hockey League and the U.S. Figure Skating Junior National Championships. In Gallegos he sees a man who has "gone to great lengths" to learn all aspects of ice making and Zamboni maintenance. Gallegos started with GCCC in housekeeping, moved to a position with the ice arena and eventually was promoted to lead rink attendant. Under the guidance of ice technician Michael Hering, he "expanded his understanding of all the related systems and equipment necessary for producing a world class ice surface," Fagan said. He added that Gallegos is "diligent, hardworking, trustworthy and self-motivated (He) sets a shining example for the rest of our staff."
