The image of Marines raising the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima would be unknown if a Navy executive hadn't wanted the flag for himself, says a veteran of the World War II battle who was in Santa Fe on Friday.

Dave Severance of La Jolla, Calif., and Bill Wayne of Yorba Linda, Calif., who were among 70,000 Marines who landed on Iwo Jima 65 years ago, stopped briefly at the Santa Fe Municipal Airport.
