Two Republican state senators are attacking an effort by the state Department of Public Safety to save money by encouraging state police officers to limit the number of miles they drive each month.

Public Safety Secretary John Denko acknowledged Friday that because of the high cost of gasoline, police brass are asking officers to "voluntarily" limit their monthly mileage to 3,000. And that limit soon could be lowered to 2,500 miles a month if gas prices stay high.
