S4: Superior Performance, Whichever Version You Choose

Summary

Comfort, luxury, sport and choice are masterfully combined in the Audi S4. Take your pick of sedan, convertible or Avant (wagon), all powered by a 340-hp V-8 coupled to a slick-shifting six-speed manual or six-speed automatic and Quattro all-wheel-drive. Driving any of the S4s takes one back to the muscle-car era: small cars with big engines, burbling V-8 exhaust notes (best heard in the convertible, naturally) and intoxicating linear acceleration but now delivered with a reassuring sense of control thanks to Quattro and sophisticated suspension. While Audi interiors are second-to-none, S4s feature upgraded leather and metal trim (a refreshing change from the usual wood or carbon fiber), supportive Recaro seats and excellent fit and finish. Driving position is first-rate with good visibility all around and precise adjustability for the seats and steering wheel-which is sized right for a clear view of the chrome- trimmed instruments. These are fast all-weather cars more suited to grand touring than mountain twisties. Well-balanced handling tends toward understeer at extremes to keep the less-experienced driver on the road. Each of the S4s has its own personality: a practical family sedan ready for shopping or track work, a convertible for wind-in-your-hair weekend cobweb removal and the Avant to haul antiques or haul ass. Pick the version to suit your needs, and your desires will be well taken care of. These cars are about driving; they urge one to take the long way home. -Bob Hall
