It's come to this: Voters who are turning out to cast ballots in this seemingly never-ending presidential election are likely to leave the polls just a little nervous -- and, depending where you live, a lot nervous -- that their votes won't count.

There's nervousness about whether ballots are recording the votes as cast -- some touch-screen machines, for example, don't always record a presidential vote on straight-ticket voting. There's the sad truth that thousands of legitimate voters have been purged from the rolls and won't get to vote at all. There have been concerted efforts to persuade college students in states such as Virginia that if they vote where they go to school they could lose financial aid or their health insurance.
