Hopi carver's uncommon katsinas gather praise

Hopi woodcarver Alfred Lomahquahu is taking his art into new directions. His pieces, all carved from the cottonwood root traditionally used by the Hopi, usually measure 1 to 3 feet tall. Lomahquahu's nearly 4-foot-tall Water Maiden won SWAIA's 2004 Best of Classification in the Wooden Pueblo Figurative Carving and Sculpture category.
