Summary
911 CARRERA CABRIOLET IS A BIG PERSON'S DREAM
As a child growing up amongst the corn and beans of Central Illinois my fancy was caught by James Bond-like cars-sleek, low, fast. They evoked a world that was far away and different. As I was growing up I dreamed of driving such cars to distant places far into the night. A favorite was the Porsche 911 Twin Turbo, then air- cooled. The difficulty was I grew up, and then grew some more. Now at 6-foot-7 and 235 pounds, I find such Bond-like cars still mostly dreams. They are built for the average, plus or minus a percentile. I could drive a C5 Corvette, but only the convertible with the top down so I could look over the windshield. A Viper was possible, though barely, because it was the baby of a tall guy -Bob Lutz when he was at Chrysler. So it was with some doubt and trepidation when I set off to Denver to swap out one test car for another. I returned a Nissan Maxima, a fine sedan. The car I was picking up: a Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Would I have to roll myself up like a window blind for the five-hour drive back to Santa Fe? Or lower the top la Corvette? Report: Not only could I get into the Porsche Cabriolet, I found it to be actually comfortable. The adjustable seats had more than adequate travel, providing excellent head room and leg room. The steering wheel adjusted up and down and telescoped. The drive was a blast and the Tipronic automatic a delight to use. One complaint: the clutter of miniature buttons and knobs on the central console of the Porsche. Their use is not intuitive, and the small buttons are hard for large fingers to manage on the fly. I might suggest that Porsche look to the new Jaguar XK (another sports car I can drive in comfort!). The Jag has a more integrated control panel with a touch-screen that I found easy to use.See the full content of this document
