Summary


Gil Shaham is used to traveling, and not just throughout the world. The vivacious violinist knows how to get around some 300 years of fiddle music -- and, incidentally, his 1699 "Countess Polignac" Stradivarius -- with easy brilliance.

Shaham and his regular recital partner, pianist Akira Eguchi, play a varied repertoire at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on Thursday, April 7. For this Santa Fe Concert Association event -- Shaham's fifth -- they've programmed Prokofiev's Sonata in D Major, op. 94a; Bach's Sonata No. 2 in A Minor for solo violin; a group of Faure pieces including the Berceuse, op. 16, Morceau de Lecture, Fileuse, and Sicilienne; as well as Polish virtuoso Henryk Wieniawski's Polonaise Brillante in A Major, op. 21, Valse, and Scherzo-tarantelle.

The Traveling Fiddler Returns

Shaham and Eguchi are performing this program a lot this season. For example, they'll perform it Tuesday, April 5, at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, then fly to Santa Fe for the SFCA date. But when Pasatiempo reached Shaham a few weeks ago in Zaragoza, Spain, he was playing different music on a different tour.
