Last week, George W. Bush finally made his first visit as president to Israel and occupied Palestine. It took him seven years. That's an extraordinary -- and sad record for the leader of the world's most powerful nation, one deeply involved militarily in the region. His previous visit was as governor of Texas, and at that time he was taken on a helicopter tour of the Holy Land. His guide and mentor was then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, a man who never used a scalpel when he could use a sledge hammer.
