These are momentous times for Europe. The old continent has a new political face, and we can only speculate on the changes to come. Nicolas Sarkozy, the tough-talking, conservative son of Hungarian immigrants, won the French presidential elections. He takes office on May 16. In Britain, Prime Minister Tony Blair, the only Labour Party leader to win three elections in a row, tended his resignation. George Brown, the powerful Chancellor of the Exchequer, is expected to replace him in late June. Both events are enormously important not only for Europe, but for the rest of the world as well.
