If the strains of "Happy Days Are Here Again" weren't as loud Tuesday night as they've been during some Democratic-victory years, perhaps it's because many in that party couldn't believe their good fortune -- and aren't sure what to do with it.

Offering few clear alternatives to Republican rule, the Dems did little more than apply oil to their get-out-the-vote machinery. And they let the GOP Congress hang itself with incompetence, corruption and reliance on religious extremists its leaders somehow thought represented mainstream America, while paying not near enough attention to the party's real base, the many moderate, fiscally concerned people of this country.
