My View: Big Trucks Don't Belong On City Streets

Summary


I recently moved back to Santa Fe and live in the same area I did in 1994, when my neighborhood association supported the Jake Brake Ordinance that forbids trucks from using their engine or "jake" brakes in the city limits.

A lot of us appeared before the City Council and cited numerous instances of interrupted sleep and just plain annoyance at the unnecessary and objectionably loud noise produced by 18-wheelers as they came down the hill on north St. Francis Drive into the city. Now, 10 years later, a new multilane bypass has been built. Yet truckers on their way through Santa Fe continue to drive through the city and continue to use their jake brakes, disregarding the ordinance prohibiting their use and disregarding and disrespecting the people of Santa Fe who live along this busy corridor.
