Our View Board's On Right Track Starting School Earlier

Summary


It's probably too sudden -- many families' summer-vacation, summer-education and summer-camp plans have already been made by now -- but the Santa Fe Public Schools Board has stuck its collective toe into promising water with its decision to start the next school year on Aug. 23 -- and on Aug. 16 the year after that.

The idea of earlier starts came from a calendar committee headed by associate superintendent Denise Johnston. It would allow for more instructional days, she said. Besides student achievement, it would let the district schedule winter break without homework hanging over students' heads. Add to that the advantage of timely filed data for state funding-formula purposes, as well as parental surveys favoring an early start, and the case was made.
