Northern New Mexico's Rep. Ben Ray Lujn has been quick to recognize that a key to an alternative-energy society is storing what's generated when the wind blows and the sun shines -- for use in calm, dark stretches. He was prompted, no doubt, by some of the scientific minds from Los Alamos National Laboratory. The lab lies in his district, so he's important to supporting the renewable- energy efforts being made on "the Hill."

LANL's mission, as the Obama administration has been quick to point out, will remain nuclear weapons first and foremost. And while that should keep America's real, potential and aspiring enemies sober, a large block of its budget is dedicated to dismantling warheads and other nuclear-nonproliferation work. The president's recent agreements with Russia to pare back the overkill in our weapons stockpiles is at least a little promising.
