My View: Opera's History Mirrors City's Rise to Prominence

Summary


Celebrating our 50th year on Canyon Road, my family is frequently asked by visitors to our studio how we feel about the changes we've seen on this Eastside street over the past half century. And, with the Santa Fe Opera also marking five decades of performances, there's considerable talk about its relatively modest origins compared to today's grand amphitheater and internationally acclaimed productions.

Don't we miss and long for the old days? I personally do not, despite having the fondest memories of the small town to which my wife, Ellen, and I relocated from New York City in 1954. When we moved to Canyon Road in 1956, the street was unpaved, still referred to by many with its Spanish designation, Camino Canon, largely residential with a mere handful of artists occupying the old adobes.
