Pete Domenici admitted early and often that his energy bill wasn't perfect. But after seeing previous attempts to pass one fail, New Mexico's senior senator this year was in a mood to compromise -- with fellow Republicans and Democrats as well.

What finally became law this summer was the proverbial legislative sausage -- thick on pork for the corn growers selling ethanol into the gasoline mix, yet green enough to fend off -- for the moment -- oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
