Ah, the Plaza: centuries-old center of a Spanish settlement long- since Americanized, and still our vibrant social -- and, arguably, economic, hub. Yet, as local writer/sage Pen La Farge puts it, the place "is being loved to death."

La Farge is one of nine Santa Feans serving on the Plaza Roundtable, formed last year after a couple of city councilors called for a ban on special-event booths from what's left of its grassy areas. While they were about it, the group wrestled with the kind of whither-the-Plaza issues raised by residents and visitors alike: What do you do with a place to which so many people gravitate, for traditional events, not-so-traditional spin-offs, spontaneous gatherings and simply a nice place to be?
