Summary


The suspense was only mild, to put it mildly: No sooner had the New Mexico Legislature put back some of the sales tax it had eliminated on grocery-store food purchases than Gov. Bill Richardson declared that he hated it. So in waiting until deadline day to act upon it, he was demonstrating at least as much showmanship as statesmanship.

On Wednesday, he made a big production of vetoing that part of the budget for the coming fiscal year.
