Hard times can be heart-warming ones when it comes to charitable giving: Those with less realize there are those with none -- and sacrifice for the sake of harder-hit members of the community.

But the financial disaster striking corporate America also is hitting most of the nonprofit institutions whose idealistic staffs and volunteers, day in and day out, provide the food, the shelter and the clothing needed by families whose own money crises often are echoes of front-office troubles: Lost jobs, and little chance of finding new ones, have many of Northern New Mexico's families on the ropes.
