Summary
A few years ago, The Santa Fe New Mexican gathered a diverse group of readers to analyze, criticize and discuss a controversial news story that divided our city along religious, ethnic and cultural lines. Those 30 readers delivered one message loud and clear: The people of Santa Fe expect their newspaper to face tough issues head-on. One thing for sure, they said, The New Mexican must report on and explain ethnic divisions in the community. Santa Fe, known around the world as a multicultural community, would demand nothing less. I am proud that our small paper thinks big and acts boldly. We may distribute only 27,000 copies a day, but we are published by a local owner who puts public service first. Our staff of 65 reporters, editors and photographers gets support to take chances and to tackle big, important issues. With 25 journalists of color among that staff, we have the breadth and depth to boldly represent community interest.
