Public Works: Keeping the City Different Bike-Friendly

Summary

Bicycle/car cooperation on Santa Fe's streets gets a boost every time another intersection or stretch of road is marked with symbols or other indicators to let both bicyclists and drivers know how to safely share the streets. Rick Devine, signal engineer supervisor with Santa Fe's Public Works Department, has taken on that challenge with suggestions from the Bicycle and Trailways Advisory Committee. In recognition of his efforts in this area, Devine was chosen as the city's August employee of the month. He was nominated by committee members Jim Harrington, Dan Baker, Tim Rogers and Gail Ryba.

Among recent projects implemented by Devine and his staff are "sharrows," large bicycle and arrow symbols painted on narrow city streets to let motorists know they must share the driving lane with bicyclists as there is no room for a separate bike lane or striped shoulder.
