As a young woman, Vicenta Ortiz-Martinez became so inspired by Our Lady of Guadalupe that she joined the Dominican Order of Sisters with the idea of devoting her life to God. But as she became a novice, she began experiencing health problems.

"I loved my time in the convent but the climate in Racine, Wis., didn't agree with me and I kept having fainting spells. I guess the nuns didn't think I would be of much use to them, so they dismissed me and I came back to Santa Fe," she said.
